The proposed Back Forty mine is ill conceived, unpopular and shortsighted. To continue support for the project, despite tremendous risk to local residents, is both immoral and unwise. I urge you to divest from Aquila Resources, Inc. and the proposed Back Forty mine. Public opinion, locally and regionally, has turned against the proposed Back Forty Mine. Aquila Resources did not properly consult local residents and tribes in the decision to pursue the project, and local residents have responded. They've organized, passed local legislation in opposition to the mine and ensured that local media has taken notice. In surrounding communities, concerns grow daily that pollution from Back Forty could devastate local economies that rely on a healthy Green Bay for industries like tourism and sport fishing. Officials from the City of Marinette, Wisconsin, which draws its drinking water from Green Bay--only a short distance from the mouth of the Menominee River--are opposed to the proposed mine. The Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin and the broader Native American community in the region stand alongside residents from across Wisconsin and Michigan in opposition to the proposed Back Forty mine. Menominee cultural artifacts and sacred sites would be desecrated by the mine's excavations and tailings piles. The very lands and waters that are the basis of the Tribe's Creation Story would be destroyed. The Menominee have already contested conditional Michigan DEQ permits with the Michigan Administrative Hearing Office, and filed a suit against the EPA to require the jurisdiction of the wetland permit review to change from the State of Michigan to the EPA. The proposed Back Forty Mine would be on the banks of the Menominee River. As an investor in Aquila Resources, you are certainly aware of the catastrophic flood events that occurred in northwestern Wisconsin in 2016. United States Geological Survey scientists have described these events as "ten times the 'thousand year' flood event." Your investment to finance an open-pit sulfide mine barely over 150 feet from a large river is subject to potential financial and legal risks on a similar scale. Climate change models predict increasingly severe rain and flood events in coming years, continuing the trends we're already experiencing. The Menominee River, draining a watershed of 4000 square miles, will experience a catastrophic flood. The only questions are when, and how badly the flood will blowout toxic tailings piles. The resulting mine waste will kill fish in the Menominee and Green Bay. Polluted drinking water will threaten hundreds of thousands of people and businesses. Local economies will suffer mightily. This investment is too risky. Please divest from Aquila Resources, Inc. and the proposed Back Forty mine.
